Hey guys!

I was having a look at the greyscalegorilla [link] light setup that you will see in these following pictures:

I think you get the idea...
Anywho! I took a look at it in C4D and, although amazing, I noticed how complicated it was, and tried to reproduce it in Blender's Cycles render engine.

Here's the light setup in Cinema 4D:

Here's my reproduction setup in Blender/Cycles:

Here's my result:

While not perfect, it's a fair representation of the GSG version, and I only used one plane divided into three parts. Left is orange, middle is yellow, and right is light blue...bypassing the softboxes and the red and dark blue colors on the ends.

Just thought I'd share, in no way am I saying "don't buy his light kits!", because he makes some really cool stuff, as well as makes some fantastic tutorials. This was only an experiment :D

Is there a way of opening a .c4d file up in Blender. A friend of mine needs it converted into another format such as an .obj?

Select everything and export it as an .obj, same as any other program. :D

Aww thanks! :aww: Lighting is the most important part in 3-D in my opinion. You could have the best model in the world and have it turn out like garbage

I agree...the lightkits are great for very specific situations...but I also agree they are a bit pricey....if people buy them then more power to the Gorilla if he can make a few bucks.....They do have great tutorials....most of what I have picked up so far about C4D was from GSG tuts...

I have that light kit and while I've used it to get, for what I consider, to be some nice results, it is geared to specific things. So I would say worth the money I paid, they have some good tutorials on the site so I feel good supporting them. On the downside of a product like that is it gives you the opportunity to get lazy rather than spend the time to learn to do your own lighting well.

Nice job in your replication
